Before engines and horsepower, people themselves were the transport system.

The word “sedan” has a surprisingly old origin, tracing back to sedan chairs—enclosed boxes carried by people through busy streets centuries ago. These were used mainly by wealthy individuals who wanted to travel in comfort while staying protected from weather, noise, and the public eye. Even then, the focus was on privacy and convenience, ideas that still define transportation today.

As time passed and technology advanced, the core concept remained the same. When early automobiles were developed, designers adopted the idea of an enclosed space for passengers. Instead of being carried by people, these vehicles were powered by engines, but the purpose didn’t change—safe, comfortable, and private travel from one place to another.

Over the years, this design evolved into what we now recognize as the modern sedan. With four doors, a separate trunk, and a focus on passenger comfort, it became one of the most popular car styles worldwide. The transition from human-powered chairs to motor vehicles shows how ideas can survive even as technology transforms them.

Today, every time someone steps into a sedan, they’re experiencing a concept that dates back hundreds of years. While the carriers and crowded streets of the past are gone, the original goal—comfortable, enclosed travel—continues to move forward with us in a modern form.
