A strange noise under a car dashboard can send any driver into panic mode. That was the case for Alex Nevarez, a New York City resident, who recently spent $700 to identify an unusual cracking sound in her vehicle—only to discover a surprisingly harmless source.
The story, shared in a TikTok video that has since racked up over 300,000 views, highlights how easy it is to misinterpret common sounds coming from modern car features.
The Mystery Sound
Nevarez first noticed the cracking noise after completing a five-hour drive. Concerned about potential engine issues, she recalled that a previous mechanic had found evidence of rodents in her car. This raised fears of a “rat’s nest” forming somewhere in the engine, especially given that the car had often been parked on NYC streets.
Despite this concern, a quick online search suggested the problem could also be as simple as low coolant levels. Already due for a routine 60,000-mile checkup, Nevarez requested a thorough inspection to ensure there were no underlying issues.
The Expensive Investigation
Mechanics spent time examining the vehicle but could not replicate or identify the mysterious sound. After $700 and a detailed inspection, the verdict was clear: nothing was mechanically wrong with the car. Nevarez’s frustration grew as the sound remained unexplained.
Returning to the vehicle, she finally discovered the source in an unexpected place—her infotainment system. A fireplace soundtrack, part of the car’s “Sounds of Nature” app, had been playing through the speakers. The crackling and popping noises mimicked burning logs in a hearth, a feature designed to create a relaxing ambiance but unintentionally mimicking a car malfunction.
