How Often Should You Really Wash Your Sheets for a Cleaner, Healthier Bed?

For years, I washed my sheets whenever I remembered, assuming that if they looked clean, they probably were. Sometimes that meant every week, sometimes longer when life became busy. Then a conversation with a friend made me wonder whether I had been treating my bedding too casually.

She reminded me that sheets collect sweat, skin oils, dead skin cells, dust, and other material while we sleep—even when they look perfectly fresh. We spend hours in bed every night, so it makes sense that bedding needs regular cleaning.

A common recommendation is to wash sheets about once a week. For people who sweat heavily at night, have allergies, share their bed with pets, or experience other factors that increase buildup, washing them more frequently may be helpful.

Pillowcases can also deserve extra attention because they come into direct contact with the face and hair for hours at a time. Blankets, comforters, and mattress protectors generally don’t need to be washed as often as sheets, but they should still be cleaned according to their care instructions.

After that conversation, I changed my routine. Instead of waiting until the bedding looked dirty, I put a regular washing day on my calendar.

The surprising part was how much fresher the bed felt afterward.

Sometimes a healthier home isn’t about making dramatic changes. It’s simply about paying attention to the everyday things we spend the most time around—especially the things we assume are clean because they look clean.
