The flowers on Emily’s grave hadn’t even wilted when Daniel said the words I would never forget.
“If they had to choose,” he whispered, staring at the floor, “I told them to save the baby.”
I looked down at Sophie sleeping against my chest and felt something inside me fracture. Emily had been my sister. She had trusted Daniel with her life, and now she was gone. I didn’t know exactly what had happened in that hospital room, but his words planted a question in my mind that refused to leave.
In the weeks that followed, Daniel seemed to disappear piece by piece. First he stopped answering calls. Then he began leaving Sophie with me for entire weekends. Eventually, weekends became weeks.
One rainy Tuesday, he arrived carrying an envelope.
Inside were legal documents.
“I can’t do this,” he said. “She needs someone who can.”
I wanted to scream at him. Instead, I held Sophie tighter.
Months passed. I learned midnight feedings, pediatric appointments, and how to function on almost no sleep. Sophie learned to reach for me whenever she was frightened.
Then, shortly before her first birthday, another envelope arrived.
This one wasn’t from Daniel.
It had been prepared by Emily months before Sophie was born.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter addressed directly to me.
The first sentence made my heart stop:
“If anything happens to me, there’s something about Daniel you need to know…”
And suddenly, everything I thought I understood about my sister’s final days began to unravel.
