Dolly Parton Was One of 12 Children — See Her Brothers and Sisters and Where They Are Today

Long before the rhinestones, towering wigs, and worldwide fame, Dolly Parton was simply one of twelve children growing up in a tiny cabin in the mountains of East Tennessee. Money was scarce, space was tighter, and the Parton children learned early that family, faith, humor, and music could make difficult days feel a little lighter.

Dolly was born in 1946 to Robert Lee Parton and Avie Lee Owens Parton. Her father worked hard to support the enormous household, while her mother cared for the children and filled their home with songs and stories. Dolly later spoke openly about their poverty, but she also remembered a childhood rich in imagination and love. Those experiences eventually became material for songs that would reach millions.

Music ran through the family. Some of Dolly’s siblings—including Stella Parton—followed her into entertainment, while others largely remained outside the spotlight. Their lives took different directions, and over the decades the family also endured painful losses. Dolly’s younger brother Floyd died in 2018, and her brother Randy died in 2021 after battling cancer. Her brother David died in 2024.

Yet the little Tennessee home they once shared remained an essential part of Dolly’s story.

She didn’t erase where she came from when she became famous. She carried it with her—in her songwriting, her humor, her generosity, and her fierce devotion to family.

Before the world knew Dolly Parton, twelve children knew her simply as their sister.
