On some mornings, it feels almost unfair. Your rear window quietly melts away a layer of frost while you’re still standing outside, scraping the windshield and shivering. The reason is hiding in plain sight: those faint brown or orange lines running across the rear glass.
They aren’t decoration. They’re part of an electrical defroster system. When you press the rear-window defrost button, electricity travels through the thin conductive strips. Their electrical resistance produces a small amount of heat, warming the glass and helping clear frost, ice, and condensation so you can see behind you.
So why doesn’t every windshield have the same obvious lines? Because placing traditional heating strips directly across the driver’s main field of vision could be distracting. Instead, vehicles typically rely on warm air from the climate-control system to clear the front windshield. Some newer vehicles also use heated windshields with extremely fine wires or conductive layers designed to be much less noticeable.
But those rear lines have one weakness: they can be damaged. Scraping the inside of the glass aggressively, removing stickers carelessly, or using abrasive materials can break a strip. When that happens, you may notice a stubborn horizontal section that refuses to clear while the rest of the window works normally.
So the next time your rear glass clears itself on a freezing morning, look closely.
