Michael J. Fox has spent more than three decades living with Parkinson’s disease, and he is no longer pretending the journey has become easier. In a recent interview, the actor acknowledged that the condition has grown more difficult over the years, even as he continues to approach life with the optimism that has defined much of his public advocacy.
Fox was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s in 1991 and later revealed his condition publicly in 1998. In 2000, he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has since become one of the world’s most influential private funders of Parkinson’s research. After 25 years of work, the foundation had funded more than $2.5 billion in research by 2025. Yet Fox believes the most important chapter may still be ahead, because the scientific progress he has spent decades pushing for is beginning to look more promising than ever.
