Shakira appeared to notice something she wasn’t comfortable with. She made that discomfort clear and then removed herself from the situation. Reports at the time said an attendee appeared to be attempting to film up her skirt, although Shakira herself did not publicly explain exactly what she saw.

Artists choose to perform in front of millions of people. They dance, wear what they choose, and share parts of themselves with audiences around the world. None of that makes every angle of their bodies available for someone else’s camera. Shakira didn’t need to turn the incident into a speech for that message to come across. In that moment, walking away said enough.
