5 Essential Things You Should Always Keep in Your Car

A first aid kit is one of the most useful things to keep nearby. Accidents can happen unexpectedly, and having bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, disposable gloves, and an emergency blanket can help you manage minor injuries until professional assistance is available. Check the kit occasionally and replace anything that has expired.

Jumper cables or a portable battery charger are another smart addition. A dead battery often seems to happen at the worst possible moment. Jumper cables allow another vehicle to give you a boost, while a portable jump starter can provide more independence when nobody else is nearby. Always follow your vehicle and equipment instructions when using them.

Keep some emergency food and water, particularly for longer journeys. Bottled water and non-perishable snacks such as granola bars, nuts, crackers, or dried fruit can make an unexpected wait much more comfortable. A flashlight and basic multi-tool can also prove useful, especially if a breakdown happens after dark. Keep spare batteries or regularly charge a rechargeable flashlight.

Finally, carry important vehicle and roadside safety equipment. A properly inflated spare tire, suitable jack, tire-pressure gauge, reflective warning triangle, and high-visibility vest can make a major difference during a roadside problem. Check these supplies every few months so they’re ready when needed. You don’t need a trunk packed with equipment—just a few sensible essentials that can help turn an unexpected roadside problem into a situation you’re better prepared to handle.
