A Handy Car Hack

The trick is simple to try. After switching off the engine, press and hold both front window switches in the closing position simultaneously. If your vehicle’s electrical system still provides power to the windows for a short period after the ignition is switched off, the windows may continue moving upward until they are closed.

However, this isn’t a universal feature or a special function triggered by pressing two buttons. Many vehicles simply have a retained-accessory-power system that keeps certain electrical components operating briefly after the ignition is turned off. Depending on the vehicle, opening a door may immediately disable that temporary power.

Other vehicles provide different ways to close their windows remotely. Some models support “global closing,” where holding the lock button on the key fob or using the physical key in the driver’s door can close multiple windows. The exact procedure varies considerably by manufacturer, model, year, and vehicle settings, so checking the owner’s manual is the best way to determine what your car actually supports.

So, if you discover an open window immediately after turning your car off, you can try the switches before restarting the ignition—but don’t be surprised if nothing happens. The useful feature isn’t necessarily pressing two buttons at once; it’s whether your particular vehicle keeps its power windows active after shutdown. If it does, you may have a few seconds or minutes to close them without starting the car again.
