Still, something about her warm expression stayed with me. I also remembered the single blooming hydrangea in her cart, vibrant and strangely beautiful in the middle of winter. Later that evening, once the house was quiet, I began unpacking my groceries. That was when I noticed handwriting on the back of the receipt she had returned. In hurried, slanted letters were four unexpected words: “Check your back seat.” Confused and suddenly concerned, I grabbed my keys and immediately went outside.
