Grandma Showed Me Her Old School Dryer Cleaning Trick and Why This Household Chore Matters

Grandma always began with safety. Before touching anything, she unplugged the electric dryer. For gas dryers, she emphasized following the manufacturer’s instructions and leaving gas connections to a qualified professional. She then carefully moved the machine far enough from the wall to access its exhaust connection without damaging the duct. Using her vacuum hose, she removed visible lint from the surrounding floor, the accessible vent opening, and the area behind the appliance. Even when you clean the lint trap after every load, she explained, debris can gradually accumulate elsewhere.

Next came her long, flexible dryer vent brush. She carefully inserted it into the accessible ductwork, following the tool’s instructions and gently loosening the lint clinging to the interior. Afterward, she vacuumed again to collect the debris. She also checked the outdoor exhaust hood for visible obstructions. It was surprising how much lint could collect in places most homeowners rarely inspect. Grandma reminded me that damaged, crushed, or unsuitable vent materials should be replaced rather than simply cleaned.

Then she showed me the old leaf blower she sometimes used for outdoor chores. Although she’d heard of people using one to clear dryer vents, a household leaf blower isn’t a universally recommended cleaning method. Excessive air pressure can damage or disconnect ductwork, potentially pushing lint into hidden spaces. For that reason, it’s safer to use equipment specifically designed for dryer-vent maintenance or hire a qualified technician, particularly when the duct is long, concealed, or difficult to access.

Once the accessible areas were clean, we checked that the vent connection was secure and that the outdoor exhaust flap could open freely. After reassembling everything according to the manufacturer’s instructions, we ran a short test cycle and checked the airflow outside. Grandma recommended inspecting the system regularly and arranging a thorough cleaning at least annually, or more frequently when necessary. Longer drying times, unusual heat, and weak outdoor airflow can all indicate a problem that needs attention.

Her lesson wasn’t really about finding a clever shortcut. It was about remembering an easily overlooked part of home maintenance.

Sometimes the most useful household wisdom is simply taking care of the little things before they become bigger problems.
