The Great Toilet Paper Debate Which Way Should It Hang

It’s one of those surprisingly heated household debates: Should the toilet paper hang over the top of the roll, with the loose end falling down the front, or should it hang underneath, against the wall?

Both methods work. Both have their loyal supporters. And yet, ask a group of people which way is “correct,” and you may be surprised by just how passionate the answers can become.

But what if there’s actually a historical answer?

The Patent That Settles the Debate

The answer can be traced back to an 1891 patent associated with perforated toilet paper rolls. Inventor Seth Wheelerincluded illustrations showing the toilet paper hanging over the top of the roll and down the front.

In other words, if you’re choosing between the two arrangements shown in the picture, option 2 is the one that matches the original patent illustration.

And there are some practical reasons why this arrangement has remained popular.

When the paper hangs over the front, the loose end is immediately visible and easy to grab. You don’t have to feel around behind the roll to find it. It also means your hand is less likely to brush against the wall when reaching for the paper, which can make the setup feel a little more convenient—and perhaps a little cleaner.

But What About Hanging It Underneath?

That doesn’t mean option 1 is without its advantages.

For households with young children or curious pets, hanging the toilet paper underneath can make it more difficult to spin the roll and unravel metres of paper in seconds. Anyone who has discovered an entire bathroom covered in toilet paper knows that this can be a surprisingly useful feature!

For some people, practicality simply matters more than historical tradition.

So, Which Way Is “Correct”?

If we’re judging purely by the historical record, option 2 wins the argument.

Of course, there’s no law saying you have to follow a design from more than a century ago. If hanging the roll underneath works better for your household, there’s nothing wrong with sticking with it.
