Michael J Fox Shares a Powerful Parenting Lesson After Raising Four Children While Facing Parkinson’s Disease

Michael J. Fox has spent much of his life balancing his professional responsibilities, family relationships, and the challenges of Parkinson’s disease. Throughout those experiences, his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four children have remained central to his life. Although his acting achievements brought him international recognition, Fox has frequently emphasized the importance of family and the everyday moments that strengthen relationships between parents and children.

One of his most memorable pieces of parenting advice concerns the importance of being available when children want to talk. Fox explained that when a child approaches a parent with something to say, asking them to wait a few minutes can have unexpected consequences. Those few minutes may become fifteen or twenty, and by the time the parent is ready to listen, the child may no longer feel comfortable sharing what was on their mind.

For that reason, Fox believes parents should make a genuine effort to listen when their children reach out. His approach is not about having perfect answers or solving every problem immediately. Instead, it emphasizes attention, patience, and creating an environment where children feel heard. He has said that making himself available has served him well as a father, demonstrating how meaningful small moments of connection can become over time.

His family’s experiences have also been shaped by his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1991. During a 2009 interview, Fox discussed how living with the condition had influenced his children’s understanding of life. He described qualities such as empathy, resilience, and recognizing what truly matters. Rather than focusing only on the difficulties associated with illness, he acknowledged the valuable lessons his children had developed through their shared experiences.

Fox’s message offers a reminder that meaningful parenting is not measured by fame, wealth, or perfection. Sometimes, one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child is simply being present, listening carefully, and making time when it matters most.
