Have you ever noticed a yellowish or brownish substance collecting near your gums, especially behind your lower front teeth? At first, it might look like an ordinary stain caused by coffee, tea, or certain foods. But sometimes, that stubborn buildup is something entirely different, and brushing harder won’t make it disappear.
The substance is called tartar, also known as dental calculus. It develops when soft dental plaque remains on the teeth long enough to harden through mineral deposits from saliva. Unlike ordinary plaque, which can often be removed through proper brushing and flossing, hardened tartar becomes firmly attached to the tooth surface.
Many people ignore tartar because it doesn’t always cause immediate pain. However, allowing it to accumulate can contribute to gum inflammation, bad breath, and more serious oral health problems.
What makes tartar particularly concerning is what can happen when it remains around the gums for too long.
