At just 21 years old, Lucas Martin had his whole future ahead of him. He had recently graduated from university with a degree in international business and was looking forward to the opportunities that awaited him. Described by his family as ambitious, energetic, and full of ideas, Lucas had every reason to be excited about the next chapter of his life.

But in September 2023, everything changed when he began experiencing headaches, fever, and overwhelming exhaustion. At first, his family believed he had caught an ordinary virus, something many young people experience around the beginning of the academic year. He showed none of the obvious symptoms they associated with a more dangerous illness, such as a distinctive rash or sensitivity to light.

As the days passed, however, Lucas’s condition continued to deteriorate. On September 10, his father noticed something deeply alarming: Lucas was mumbling and struggling to form sentences.

Realizing something was seriously wrong, his family rushed him to hospital. Doctors soon discovered that the illness was far more dangerous than anyone had imagined.
