After eighteen years of marriage, I believed I knew everything about my husband, Wade. We had built a comfortable life together, shared countless memories, and supported each other through difficult times. One morning, he asked me to visit the county clerk’s office during my lunch break to renew his truck registration. It seemed like an ordinary errand, but while I was there, I remembered that I also needed a certified copy of our marriage license for my employer’s health insurance.

When I gave the clerk my husband’s name, she typed it into her computer and suddenly became quiet. Then she asked a question that made me laugh nervously: “Which marriage?” I explained that Wade had only one wife. But the clerk turned her screen toward me, revealing two marriage records under his name. The first was ours, filed eighteen years earlier. The second had been registered just three years ago.

My hands began trembling. When I requested the second marriage certificate, I discovered a name from my husband’s past that I had spent years trying to forget.
