Pause, then make your boundary clear: threats won’t determine what you can afford or what you’re willing to provide. When you’re both calmer, ask what transportation would change for him. Work, school, and practical independence deserve a serious conversation, including insurance, maintenance, fuel, and who will pay.
If there’s a genuine need, consider realistic options together: a cheaper vehicle, shared expenses, a savings plan, or public transportation. Support can mean helping him build a workable plan rather than handing over the keys. If your adult child decides to leave, acknowledge that choice without financing it out of fear. Keep communication open while allowing him responsibility for his decisions. You can love him deeply, refuse the ultimatum, and still offer a relationship grounded in mutual respect.
