All I wanted was a quiet lunch. I wasn’t particularly hungry, and the regular meals seemed far too large for my appetite. When I noticed a smaller, more affordable option on the children’s menu, I thought I’d found the perfect solution. I politely asked the waitress if I could order it. But instead of taking my order, she hesitated and explained that those meals were reserved for children.
I understood that restaurants have rules, but I couldn’t help feeling frustrated. Why should my age determine how much food I was allowed to order? I wasn’t asking for anything free. I simply wanted a smaller portion and was perfectly willing to pay the listed price.
The waitress explained that children’s meals were sometimes offered at reduced prices to accommodate families, not necessarily to provide cheaper alternatives for adults. Suddenly, what seemed like a simple request became a question of fairness. Should restaurants make exceptions for customers with smaller appetites, or should everyone follow the same rules?
The experience made me think about how often older adults, people with limited appetites, and customers watching their budgets face similar situations. Perhaps offering smaller adult portions would make everyone happier. After all, eating out should be enjoyable, not an argument over how much someone is expected to eat.
