A tense Bonus Round moment on the popular game show Wheel of Fortune has sparked heated debate online after one contestant narrowly lost out on a huge cash prize because of a split-second decision. Many viewers are now questioning whether the ruling was truly fair.
The controversy happened during a December episode featuring Amanda Brown, a dancer from San Diego. Throughout the game, Brown proved to be a strong competitor, solving several important puzzles and building impressive earnings along the way. Her biggest success came during the risky Express Train round, where contestants can either quickly gain money or lose everything. Brown handled the pressure perfectly, winning extra cash and even securing a vacation prize. By the end of the main game, she had earned more than $22,000 and advanced to the Bonus Round.
For the final puzzle, Brown selected the “Food & Drink” category. After choosing her additional letters, the puzzle board displayed “MAPLE TA_ _ _.” As the countdown clock ticked closer to zero, Brown rushed to solve the answer. In the final second, she said “Maple Taffy,” which was the correct solution, but the buzzer sounded almost at the same time.
Host Ryan Seacrest briefly consulted with the judges before announcing that Brown’s answer came too late. As a result, she lost the $40,000 prize hidden in the envelope. Fans quickly flooded social media, arguing that she answered in time and deserved the winnings. The moment has since become one of the show’s most debated rulings, proving that in high-stakes competitions, even a fraction of a second can change everything.
