10 Bedtime Habits Adults Over 60 Should Pay Attention To — Some May Be Affecting Their Health Without Them Realizing

As we age, healthy sleep becomes especially important for maintaining energy, concentration, mood, and overall well-being. One habit worth addressing is ignoring loud, persistent snoring, particularly when accompanied by gasping or pauses in breathing, which may indicate sleep apnea. Another is going to bed at wildly different times, which can disrupt the body’s natural sleep-wake rhythm. Drinking large amounts of water immediately before bed may lead to frequent bathroom trips, while using alcohol to fall asleep can cause fragmented sleep and worsen certain breathing problems. Staying hydrated throughout the day and maintaining a reasonably consistent bedtime can help support more restful nights.

A fifth concern is taking sleeping pills without appropriate medical guidance. Some medications can cause dizziness, confusion, or impaired coordination, increasing fall risks in older adults. Anyone already taking prescribed sleep medication should consult a healthcare professional before changing or stopping it. Another often-overlooked habit is neglecting bedtime oral hygiene. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between the teeth helps protect against cavities and gum disease. Ignoring frequent nighttime urination is also worth reconsidering. Repeated bathroom visits may sometimes be related to medication effects, bladder conditions, diabetes, or other health concerns. Persistent or new symptoms deserve medical attention rather than simply being dismissed as aging.

The eighth habit involves sleeping in an unsafe bedroom. Loose rugs, clutter, electrical cords, and poor lighting can increase the chance of falling when getting out of bed at night. Keeping a clear path to the bathroom and using a night-light are practical precautions. Another concern is sleeping in a position that repeatedly worsens pain or breathing difficulties. Supportive pillows and comfortable positioning may help some people, but persistent discomfort or breathlessness when lying down should be assessed by a healthcare professional. Finally, ignoring ongoing sleep problems can delay recognition of treatable conditions. Frequent awakenings, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, or persistent insomnia are symptoms worth discussing with a clinician.

The encouraging news is that improving sleep doesn’t always require major lifestyle changes. Regular daytime activity, exposure to morning daylight, limiting caffeine late in the day, and creating a relaxing evening routine may all help. A comfortable bedroom and appropriate treatment of underlying health conditions can also make a difference. Everyone’s sleep needs are different, and occasional restless nights are not necessarily a sign of serious illness. However, loud snoring with breathing pauses, recurring dizziness, and persistent sleep disturbances should never be ignored. Sudden or severe breathing difficulties require urgent medical care. Paying attention to these everyday habits can help older adults protect their comfort, independence, and nighttime safety.

If you’re over 60, which bedtime habit do you think is the hardest to change — drinking water late, waking up frequently, or keeping a regular sleep schedule? 🌙
