Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara made headlines around the world in 2006 after giving birth to twin boys at the age of 66. The retired store employee from Cádiz, Spain, became known as the world’s oldest mother after undergoing IVF treatment in the United States — a decision that sparked both admiration and intense criticism.

Maria believed that women should have the freedom to decide when they become mothers, regardless of age or social expectations. To afford the treatment, she reportedly sold her home and traveled to California, where she claimed to be younger in order to qualify for IVF. Even some of her relatives strongly disagreed with her decision and initially struggled to accept the pregnancy.

Despite the controversy, Maria gave birth to healthy twin boys, Christian and Pau, and described motherhood as one of the happiest experiences of her life. But tragedy struck only months later when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
