A red sedan had slammed into a utility pole, its front end folded inward, while another vehicle sat damaged several yards away. For a few seconds, nobody seemed to know what had happened. Then doors opened, people ran outside, and someone called emergency services. The evening had been ordinary only moments earlier. Now the street was filled with flashing lights, frightened voices, and the sharp smell of leaking fuel.

Paramedics arrived first, moving quickly between the wrecked vehicles. Officers began securing the road while witnesses tried to explain what they had seen. Scattered across the pavement were pieces of glass, papers, a torn bag, and a single shoe. Everything looked strangely personal amid the destruction. One witness insisted the red car had suddenly crossed the center line. Another claimed the driver appeared to react to something just before impact. But as investigators examined the skid marks, one detail began to trouble them. The marks did not match the story anyone had expected—and when an officer looked inside the wrecked sedan, he suddenly stopped speaking.
