The Cloth Diaper Diaries An Incredible Trip Down Memory Lane

The first time I tell this story, people laugh—until they realize I’m not joking. Then the room goes quiet. They picture the toilet, the cloth, the bare hands, and the courage no one praised. They imagine the smell, the pail, and the moment everything finally snapped. They swear I must be exaggerating, because surely nobody lived like that. But we did.

There was no button to press, no roll of soft paper waiting beside us, and no air freshener to hide what happened behind a closed door. You learned quickly not to complain. Water had to be carried, cloths had to be washed, and the same unpleasant chores returned every single day. Privacy was a luxury, comfort was something you heard about, and embarrassment disappeared because survival didn’t leave much room for it.

The strangest part is that, back then, none of us thought we were especially tough. It was simply life. Mothers scrubbed what needed scrubbing. Fathers emptied what needed emptying. Children learned the rules before they were old enough to understand why those rules existed. Nobody posted about it. Nobody expected applause.

Years later, I stood inside a modern bathroom and watched a child wave a hand beneath an automatic faucet. The water appeared instantly. He complained because it wasn’t warm enough.

I nearly laughed.

Then I remembered that old pail.

Maybe progress is supposed to make us forget certain hardships. Maybe that’s the whole point. But sometimes I wish younger generations could see—not experience, just see—how ordinary people once handled the most uncomfortable parts of everyday life.

Because the shocking thing isn’t what we had to do.

It’s how completely normal it once seemed.
