Red Spots on Your Skin

A typical cherry angioma is usually small, round or oval, and relatively uniform in appearance. Some remain almost unchanged for years, while others slowly become larger. A dermatologist can often recognize one simply by examining it, although an unusual-looking lesion may need additional evaluation.

Pay attention when a new or existing spot changes rapidly, repeatedly bleeds without an obvious injury, becomes painful, develops unusual colors or borders, or otherwise looks noticeably different from your other spots. A sudden appearance of many unexplained red spots also deserves medical attention because several different skin and medical conditions can produce red marks.

Cherry angiomas themselves generally don’t need to be removed. If one repeatedly catches on clothing, bleeds after being irritated, or is cosmetically bothersome, a dermatologist may discuss removal methods such as laser treatment, electrosurgery or other appropriate procedures. Avoid attempting to cut, burn, freeze, or remove one yourself because bleeding, infection and scarring can occur.

Most importantly, don’t diagnose every red spot from appearance alone. Cherry angiomas are extremely common and usually harmless, but photographs and online descriptions cannot reliably identify every skin lesion. If you’re uncertain about a new mark—or notice meaningful changes—having it examined by a qualified healthcare professional is the safest way to determine what it actually is.
