How Many Monkeys Do You See

At first glance, the picture seems incredibly simple: several cartoon monkeys arranged neatly in rows. Count them quickly and you might feel certain you’ve found the answer. But look again. Some of the larger monkeys contain smaller monkeys, while other areas include overlapping figures that are easy to overlook during your first scan.

The original caption makes an even more dramatic claim, suggesting that the number you see can determine whether you’re a narcissist. That certainly makes people stop scrolling and count—but there’s an important catch. A visual puzzle like this cannot diagnose narcissism or Narcissistic Personality Disorder. What it can demonstrate is something much simpler and genuinely interesting: our attention doesn’t capture every detail in an image equally. And once you know where to look, you may suddenly realize your first count wasn’t even close to the complete picture.
