My grandmother Estelle spent 43 years attending the same little church. Even when walking became difficult, she never missed Sunday service. Helping others was simply part of who she was.
Three weeks before she passed away, Grandma called me into her bedroom and handed me a velvet jewelry box.
Inside was a beautiful gold necklace, bracelet, and matching earrings. My grandfather had given them to her for their 25th wedding anniversary.
“These should help someone,” she whispered.
She wanted the church to auction the jewelry and use the money to feed struggling families.
I accompanied her to church, where Pastor Calvin gratefully accepted the donation.
Twelve days later, Grandma passed away.
Weeks afterward, I returned to church, still grieving her loss.
That’s when I noticed something that made my stomach drop.
The pastor’s wife, Janine, was wearing Grandma’s entire jewelry collection.
When I asked where she had gotten it, she smiled.
“My mother left it to me.”
