When my ex-husband, Richard, invited me to Christmas dinner, I knew something wasn’t right. We had been divorced for six years, and he had barely spoken to me since leaving our marriage for a younger woman.
Still, I accepted his invitation.
When I arrived, his beautiful house was filled with expensive decorations, cheerful music, and guests dressed in their finest clothes.
Richard greeted me with a smug smile before introducing his new fiancée, Vanessa.
“Isn’t she wonderful?” he asked loudly. “Sometimes life gives you a second chance at happiness.”
I smiled politely, although his words hurt more than I wanted to admit.
Throughout dinner, Richard made little comments about my modest lifestyle and how much his life had improved since our divorce.
Then he announced that Vanessa was expecting their first child.
Everyone applauded.
But just as Richard raised his glass for another toast, the doorbell rang.
Standing outside were four young boys, dressed in matching winter coats.
The oldest stepped forward, holding a small envelope.
“Excuse me,” he said. “We’re looking for Richard.”
When Richard saw what was written on the envelope, his face turned completely pale.
