Waiter Receives a $3.28 Tip from Teens—Days Later, a Surprising Note Arrives

Wanting to make their evening special, the waiter went above and beyond to ensure they had a great experience. He recalled his own high school days and the excitement of such events, so he provided attentive service, accommodated allergies, and treated them with the same respect as any other guests.

But when the group left behind just $3.28, he couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Like many servers in the U.S., he relied on tips to supplement his wages, and the small amount felt like a lack of appreciation.

For days, he was left with the impression that the teens simply didn’t care—until something unexpected happened.

A Heartfelt Apology Arrives

A few days later, the waiter received a letter from the teenagers, along with an additional tip:

“About a week and a half ago, on October 7, my three friends and I came to eat at this restaurant as part of our homecoming celebration. It was a new experience for us, and you were the best waiter we could’ve asked for. You were kind, helpful, accommodating, and didn’t treat us like kids. You even adjusted the food for my allergies! So I wanted to say thank you for making our ‘grown-up’ experience so special.”

The letter went on to explain that the group, being just 13 years old, had no real understanding of tipping etiquette.

“We didn’t know what a tip was, let alone how much to give. So we emptied our pockets, and all we had added up to $3.28. At the time, we didn’t realize how small that really was. When we later understood, we felt horrible. We knew we had to make it right.”

Enclosed in the envelope was the correct 18% tip, plus extra as an apology for their mistake.

“We appreciate your patience and kindness. Thank you for making our night so much fun!”

What began as a disappointing moment turned into a heartwarming reminder that sometimes, people just need a little time to do the right thing.

This heartfelt gesture of apology and generosity not only corrected an honest mistake but also highlighted the teens’ deep appreciation, making a lasting impact on the server.
