At First, This Advice Sounded Unusual. But There’s More To The Story Than Meets The Eye

Some keyless cars unlock and start when they detect a nearby authorized fob. In a relay attack, thieves use equipment to relay communication between the car and a distant key, potentially fooling the vehicle into treating that key as nearby. Aluminum foil wrapped around the fob may block enough radio energy to interfere with this process. But protection depends on the wrapping: gaps, tears, and everyday wear can undermine it. It is a possible precaution, not a guarantee.

For a more practical option, choose a purpose-built Faraday pouch and verify that it works with your key. With the fob enclosed, check whether the car still unlocks using its passive entry function; keep any spare keys away during the test. Repeat checks regularly, since shielding can deteriorate. Store keys away from exterior doors and windows, and consult your vehicle’s manual about disabling passive entry. These small precautions can add meaningful protection.
