While helping clean out her late grandmother’s house, my friend came across a pair of strange metal objects tucked away in an old cabinet. In older mechanical clocks, these weights were attached to chains and slowly lowered over time, helping power the clock’s movement through gravity. Once the weights reached the bottom, they had to be pulled back up again to keep the clock running.
It is amazing how ordinary household items from the past can seem completely unfamiliar today. Discoveries like this are small reminders of how much everyday life has changed over the generations. What once sat openly in someone’s living room can now look like a forgotten artifact from another world.
