When you think of vinegar, your mind probably goes straight to salad dressings, pickling, or household cleaning. But there’s another place where this pantry staple can be surprisingly useful: your laundry room. For years, many people have added distilled white vinegar to their wash routine as a simple way to help remove detergent residue, reduce odors, and keep towels feeling softer.
Distilled white vinegar contains acetic acid, which can help dissolve some mineral deposits and detergent residue that build up in fabrics over time. It isn’t a replacement for bleach and won’t magically turn heavily stained or yellowed clothes bright white. However, by helping remove dulling residue, it may make some white fabrics look fresher and brighter. And if your towels have gradually become stiff or rough after repeated washing, there’s another reason vinegar may be useful.
