At 17, My 3 Best Friends and I Promised to Meet at Our Old Bench 55 Years Later — When I Arrived, They Were Gone, but 3 Boxes With My Name Were Waiting

Fifty-five years ago, my three best friends and I promised that no matter where life took us, we would meet again at the little lake where we’d spent our teenage years. In the summer of 1970, there were four of us: Gordon, Ellis, Vaughn, and me, Leonard. On graduation night, knowing our lives were about to separate, Gordon suggested we return to the same bench exactly 55 years later. We put our hands together and promised we would be there.

For the first few years, letters traveled between New Zealand, Denmark, Spain, and my hometown. Then suddenly, their letters stopped coming. I wrote again, but nobody answered. Eventually, I accepted that my friends had moved on. I married, raised a family, and built a life. Still, I never forgot our promise. So 55 years later, I returned to that lake expecting an empty bench. Nobody was there—but three boxes with my name were waiting for me.
