You’re scrolling through social media when a headline stops you: “I just found out what Kit Kat really means—and I can’t believe I never knew this!” Soon, people are claiming the name is an acronym, that every letter represents a hidden phrase, or that it was created during World War II.
But Kit Kat isn’t an acronym, and those viral explanations don’t match the brand’s documented history. The chocolate-covered wafer originated in York, England, where Rowntree’s launched it in 1935 under the name “Chocolate Crisp.” Nestlé’s official history says the familiar KitKat name and branding appeared on the packaging in 1937. Today, it has become one of the world’s best-known confectionery brands. But if those mysterious letters don’t secretly stand for anything, where did the unusual name actually come from?
