Dolly’s Greatest Choice

Dolly Parton became far more than a country singer. Over the decades, she became an unforgettable American icon whose music, personality, generosity, and determination touched millions of people. Among the many stories connected to her extraordinary career was one involving another legendary Tennessee musician, Elvis Presley. Although Dolly and Elvis never actually met, their names became connected through one song that would eventually become one of the most famous recordings in music history. Dolly had written “I Will Always Love You” years earlier, and when Elvis showed interest in recording it, she was thrilled by the possibility.

There was only one problem. Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, had a condition that could change everything. Dolly was told that if Elvis recorded her song, she would have to give up the publishing rights. At the time, Dolly was still building her career and was under enormous pressure to accept an opportunity that could potentially make her song famous around the world. Many people might have agreed immediately. After all, having Elvis Presley record your song seemed like an opportunity that could never come again. Dolly, however, had to make a decision that would affect her future in a way she could never have imagined.
