If you’ve ever experienced sciatica, you know it can feel like much more than a sore back. The pain may be sharp, burning, or electric-like, beginning in the lower back or buttock and traveling down one leg. For some people, even everyday activities such as walking, sitting, or sleeping become uncomfortable. Many uncomplicated cases improve over time with gentle activity and appropriate self-care.
Sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots become irritated or compressed. Herniated discs and spinal narrowing are common causes, while other conditions can produce similar symptoms. Complete bed rest usually isn’t recommended; comfortable movement can often help. However, loss of bowel or bladder control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, rapidly worsening weakness, or severe symptoms following an injury require urgent medical evaluation. For ordinary symptoms, several gentle movements may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
