What began as an ordinary morning walk ended in an unimaginable tragedy. In February 2023, 85-year-old Gloria Serge was walking her beloved Shih Tzu, Trooper, near a lake at a Florida retirement community. It was a familiar routine, one she had likely enjoyed countless times. But within moments, an enormous alligator emerged from the water, turning a peaceful morning into a desperate fight for survival.
According to reports, the approximately 11-foot alligator initially lunged toward Trooper. The little dog managed to escape, but Gloria was caught by the animal and pulled toward the lake. Her friend and neighbor, Carol Thomas, witnessed the terrifying incident and desperately tried to help.
Carol reportedly urged Gloria to swim toward an overturned paddle boat. But Gloria’s heartbreaking response was just four words: “The gator has me!” Carol attempted to intervene using a metal pole, but despite her efforts, she was unable to rescue her friend. Tragically, Gloria lost her life, while Trooper survived unharmed.
Wildlife officials later captured and euthanized the alligator. Gloria’s family was left devastated, and Carol struggled with painful memories of the rescue attempt. The tragedy also served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wildlife near lakes and waterways.
π Our thoughts are with Gloria’s family. Have you ever encountered an alligator or another dangerous wild animal near your home?
