Picking the perfect watermelon can sometimes feel like pure luck, especially when dozens of nearly identical melons are piled together at the supermarket or farmers’ market.
While there’s no foolproof way to know exactly how sweet a watermelon will taste without cutting it open, its appearance and weight can provide several useful clues. One of the first things to examine is the field spot, the area where the watermelon rested on the ground while growing. A creamy yellow or golden field spot can be consistent with a mature melon, while a very pale spot may suggest it was harvested earlier. But that’s only one clue.
