I Adopted Six Orphaned Siblings to Keep Them Together Until a Stranger Revealed Their Mother’s Secret

Thomas explained that the children’s biological mother, Rebecca Lawson, had left a letter with instructions that it be delivered when her oldest children turned eighteen. But before handing it over, he revealed something astonishing: Rebecca had known who I was long before I adopted her children. I couldn’t understand how. We had never been friends, and I barely remembered meeting her. With my six children gathered around me, I opened the envelope and began reading.

Rebecca explained that our children had attended the same elementary school. Years earlier, she had watched me defend one of her sons when another parent criticized him for accidentally knocking something over. On another occasion, she had seen me gently correct my daughter Sophie after she behaved unkindly toward her brother. Those ordinary moments had stayed with Rebecca because she saw both compassion and responsibility in the way I treated children.

When Rebecca became seriously ill, she worried that her six children would be separated after her death. Their father had already died, and no relative could take all six. Remembering me, she asked the placement agency to consider contacting me if no suitable family arrangement could keep them together. She knew I had suffered a devastating loss and didn’t want me to feel obligated. That was why she insisted nobody tell me about her request. Rachel had approached me without knowing Rebecca was behind it.

As I finished reading, tears filled my eyes. Rebecca hadn’t arranged the adoption or chosen me as their guardian. She had simply hoped I might be given an opportunity to help. I had made the decision freely, and over ten difficult, wonderful years, the children and I had become a family. Later that evening, Claire quietly joined me at the kitchen table and rested her hand over mine. I remembered Rebecca’s final wish: that her children would someday feel comfortable reaching for my hand.

I finally understood that loving my six adopted children hadn’t replaced the family I lost. My heart had simply found room to love again. Rebecca had opened a door, but the seven of us had chosen to become a family.
