I Brought a Fake Boyfriend to My Ex-Husband’s Wedding — But What He Did When My Ex Humiliated Me Left Everyone Speechless

Theo placed the cardboard box on a nearby table and pulled out an enormous pair of jeans. Everyone stared in confusion, including me. Then he explained that the jeans had belonged to him four years earlier, when he weighed more than one hundred pounds more than he did now. Brent looked unimpressed, but Theo wasn’t finished. He reminded me of an afternoon at work when someone had offered him birthday cake. Theo had refused, making a cruel joke about his own appearance. I barely remembered telling him that nobody deserved to speak about themselves that way. But Theo remembered every word. He explained that my kindness had helped him stop measuring his worth by his weight, long before his appearance changed.

Then Theo turned toward Brent and asked why a man celebrating his own wedding still needed to convince his former wife that nobody could love her. The room fell silent. Brent had no answer. For a moment, I felt victorious, but then something uncomfortable struck me. I had brought Theo because I wanted his appearance to prove something about my value. In doing so, I had allowed Brent’s judgment to influence me once again. Theo and I stepped into the hallway, where he admitted he had come because he cared about me and didn’t want me facing such a difficult day alone. Before I could respond, my eleven-year-old daughter, Hannah, appeared. She had overheard her father’s insults and wanted to know why I needed a boyfriend. When I explained, she quietly reminded me that she and her little sister already wanted me in their lives. Her words nearly brought me to tears.

Moments later, Brent appeared with his new bride, Brooke. This time, I didn’t let him control the conversation. I asked why my romantic future mattered so much to him when he had already chosen someone else. He tried dismissing his remarks as jokes, but Brooke had witnessed enough. She confronted him for humiliating the mother of his children at their wedding and walked away, leaving Brent visibly uncomfortable. We stayed until the girls finished dessert, then prepared to leave. Even then, Brent demanded to know whether Theo and I were really together. I simply smiled and walked away. For the first time, I understood that I didn’t owe him an explanation about my life.

Outside, Hannah asked whether her dress looked strange. Instead of teaching her to depend on someone else’s approval, I asked whether she liked wearing it. When she smiled and said yes, I told her that was what mattered. Later, I caught my reflection in the car window and realized I was no longer examining every flaw Brent had criticized. I was finally beginning to see myself without his judgment. The following Monday, Theo appeared at my desk carrying coffee. He nervously admitted that although he had agreed to pretend to be my boyfriend, his feelings hadn’t been entirely pretend. He had wanted to ask me on a real date for some time. I smiled but explained that I needed to learn to value myself before beginning another relationship. Theo understood and said he was willing to wait. There was no dramatic kiss or instant happy ending. Just the possibility of something genuine, two daughters who loved me, and the realization that my worth had never depended on Brent’s approval.

❤️ Do you think Theo was right to stand up for Natalie at the wedding? And would you give someone like him a chance at love?
