I Promised My Best Friend a Prom Dance at Six, Then Mom Revealed His Secret

When I was six, I made a promise to my best friend, Noah: one day, we would go to prom together. Noah had Down syndrome, and even as children, he understood that some people treated him differently. I never understood why. To me, he was simply the boy who shared his snacks, carried my backpack when I was tired, and made me laugh harder than anyone else. When he asked, “Will you dance with me at prom when we’re big?” I hooked my pinky around his and promised I would.

Twelve years later, prom night finally arrived. I had bought a dark green dress, while Noah had spent weeks practicing how to tie his burgundy tie. Everything felt exactly as we had imagined—until Mom walked into my bedroom, quietly closed the door, and locked it behind her. Her eyes were filled with tears. “Before you leave tonight,” she whispered, “there’s something about Noah you need to know.” Then she handed me an envelope hidden in her dresser for years.
