I stumbled across this strange, bumpy green ball under the trees. It looks almost like a brain and feels sticky to the touch. Any idea what it could be?.

Put salt in your toilet. Here’s why. – Wake Up Your Mind

At first glance, it honestly looks like something from another planet.

Sitting under the trees like a giant green brain, the strange bumpy ball immediately catches people off guard. Its surface looks oddly wrinkled and almost artificial, while the sticky texture makes it even more unsettling when picked up. Most people who discover one for the first time assume it must be dangerous, poisonous, or some kind of bizarre fungus.

But the truth is much simpler.

This unusual object is called an Osage orange, also known as a hedge apple or monkey ball. It comes from the Osage orange tree, a species native to parts of North America. Despite the name, it is not actually related to regular oranges at all.

The fruit’s strange appearance is what makes it so memorable. Its deeply textured surface resembles folds of a brain, and when freshly fallen, it often feels sticky because of the milky sap inside. While humans usually don’t eat them due to their bitter taste and tough texture, the fruits once played an important role in nature. Some scientists believe large prehistoric animals may have helped spread them thousands of years ago.

Over time, people also began using hedge apples for practical reasons. Some place them around homes believing they help repel insects and spiders, though scientific evidence is mixed.

Strange-looking and mysterious at first, this bizarre green fruit is really just one of nature’s most unusual creations hiding in plain sight.
