I Tried a Dishwasher Tablet in My Shower Drain for a Month—Here’s What Actually Happened

By the end of the month, the shower generally looked cleaner, and soap residue seemed easier to manage. However, some dissolved detergent occasionally remained around the drain and required additional rinsing. The experiment also made one limitation obvious: dishwasher tablets don’t physically remove the hair that commonly causes shower clogs.

More importantly, dishwasher tablets are formulated to work inside dishwashers, not as drain-cleaning products. Their detergents and other ingredients are designed for a controlled dishwasher cycle. Even if they appear to freshen a shower drain or loosen surface grime, that doesn’t mean they’re an appropriate or effective treatment for plumbing.

The experiment also couldn’t prove that the tablet itself caused every improvement. Extra rinsing and more frequent attention to the shower could have contributed to the cleaner appearance and reduced odors. For ordinary maintenance, physically removing trapped hair, cleaning the drain cover, and following the cleaning guidance appropriate for your plumbing are more dependable approaches.

So would I continue putting a dishwasher tablet down the shower drain every week? No. While the bathroom seemed fresher and some residue appeared easier to clean, the results weren’t dramatic enough to justify turning an off-label cleaning hack into a regular routine. A persistent slow drain, recurring odor, or complete blockage may indicate buildup or another plumbing problem that needs proper cleaning or professional attention. Sometimes an interesting internet trick works just well enough to seem convincing—but the simplest maintenance methods remain the safer choice.
