I was feeding my 5-month-old baby on a plane when the woman beside me yelled, “Have some shame! Go do that in the bathroom!” — then my older daughter stepped in and teached her a lesson

The photograph showed the woman’s daughter holding a baby. Hallie placed it beside a photograph of our own family and calmly asked, “Would you want somebody talking to your daughter the way you talked to my mom?” The woman, Patrice, stared at the pictures before quietly admitting she wouldn’t.

Patrice explained that the baby was her grandson and that she was flying to meet him for the first time. Her relationship with her daughter, Laurel, had become strained because Laurel felt constantly criticized. Patrice even admitted she had planned to criticize her daughter for breastfeeding around other people.

When I returned to my seat, I told Patrice what she could never have known from looking at me: my husband had died only four weeks earlier. Hallie had just buried her father, Owen would know his dad mainly through photographs, and I was traveling because I was struggling to rebuild our lives. Patrice apologized and eventually sent Laurel a message. Her daughter replied that Patrice could still visit—but needed to meet the mother Laurel already was rather than trying to remake her.

At the airport, we watched Patrice approach Laurel without criticism or unsolicited advice. She simply asked whether she could hug her. Weeks later, Hallie and I received a photograph of Patrice with Laurel and her grandson, along with a note thanking us for helping her recognize how her criticism had been hurting their relationship. Hallie pinned the photograph beside my mother’s refrigerator and quietly reminded me of something Dean always believed: people really can change when they are willing to admit they were wrong.
