After eleven years of marriage, I thought I understood my husband, Lucas. He was a dedicated trauma surgeon who worked exhausting hours, often missing birthdays, anniversaries, and family dinners. We lived in Colorado with our eight-year-old daughter, Emma, and although his absence hurt, I believed he was doing everything possible to provide for us.
One Tuesday morning, I decided to surprise him at the hospital with his favorite sandwich, apple pie, and a handwritten note. But when I arrived, his colleague Adrian looked uncomfortable. He hesitated before asking whether Lucas had told me he was leaving.
Confused, I asked what he meant. Adrian explained that Lucas had accepted another job in Oregon. Everyone at the hospital apparently knew except me.
