If You’re Bitten by a Snake, Here’s What to Do and What to Avoid

A snakebite is a medical emergency, but survival often depends less on the snake and more on your choices. The safest response is simple: get away from the animal, stay as calm as you can, and keep the bitten limb still and at about heart level. Call emergency services immediately or head straight to the nearest hospital; antivenom, when needed, is the only real antidote, and time matters. Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing before swelling traps them, then lightly clean and loosely cover the wound.Equally critical is what you refuse to do. Do not cut the skin, suck the bite, apply ice, tourniquets, alcohol, or caffeine; all can worsen damage or complicate treatment. Never waste time chasing or killing the snake—describe it from a safe distance if you can, but your priority is reaching professional care. Don’t wait for symptoms. If you’re bitten, act as if the bite is venomous and let doctors decide.
