The principal stopped in the hallway when he noticed Little Johnny sitting on a bench, laughing so hard that tears were running down his cheeks. Normally, students sent out of class looked worried, embarrassed, or afraid of getting into further trouble. But Johnny seemed to be having the time of his life.
“Johnny,” the principal asked, folding his arms, “why are you sitting outside your classroom instead of studying?”
Johnny tried to stop laughing long enough to explain.
“Well, sir, I accidentally farted during the lesson, and my teacher got so angry that she sent me outside.”
The principal shook his head. He had dealt with Johnny’s mischievous behavior before, so the explanation didn’t surprise him.
“That’s not something to be proud of, young man,” he replied. “You disrupted the entire class. I hope you’ve learned your lesson.”
Johnny nodded politely, but a few seconds later, he started laughing again.
Now the principal was genuinely confused.
“Johnny, I don’t understand. You’ve been punished, you’re missing your lesson, and your teacher is angry with you. What could possibly be so funny?”
Johnny looked toward the classroom door, then back at the principal.
He took a deep breath and tried to control his laughter.
“Well, sir,” he said, “think about it for a moment.”
The principal raised an eyebrow.
“Think about what?”
Johnny grinned.
“I made the terrible smell, but I’m the one who gets to sit outside enjoying the fresh air!”
He pointed toward the classroom.
“Meanwhile, everyone else is still trapped inside smelling it!”
For several seconds, the principal stood completely silent.
He had been preparing to give Johnny another lecture about classroom manners, but the boy’s unexpected reasoning caught him off guard.
Finally, the principal turned away, struggling to hide a smile.
Johnny leaned back against the wall, looking extremely pleased with himself.
The teacher thought she had punished Little Johnny, but in Johnny’s mind, she had accidentally given him the best seat in the school!
Sometimes, the funniest part of a joke isn’t what happens—it’s the completely unexpected way someone looks at the situation.
