Lunch lady fired after giving away free food

For 14 years, Debbie Solsman worked in the cafeteria at Denver Place Elementary School in Ohio, where she became known for quietly helping students who didn’t have enough money for lunch. While children still received the required meal, those with unpaid lunch accounts were often given a simple cheese sandwich, something Debbie felt embarrassed and singled them out.

Whenever she could, Debbie upgraded those meals or gave hungry children extra food. Some students told her they hadn’t eaten since the night before, and she couldn’t ignore their hunger. If she didn’t have enough cash with her, she paid for the meals herself later, even leaving herself IOUs to repay from her next paycheck.

In 2017, after 14 years at the school, Debbie was fired for providing food without payment and failing to properly account for meal sales, including meals given to her own grandchildren. The story quickly drew national attention, with many people criticizing the school district. Debbie, however, acknowledged that she had broken the rules and said the district had treated her well over the years, though she believed the punishment was too severe.

When asked if she would make the same choice again, Debbie didn’t hesitate. Her answer was a simple “Yes.” For her, the hardest decision was never whether to bend the rules—it was looking into the eyes of a hungry child and refusing them something to eat. Her story continues to spark conversations about compassion, school lunch policies, and the difficult choices some workers face every day.
