Man who won lottery 14 times explains simple math he used to beat the system

Stefan Mandel became famous for winning the lottery 14 times, but his success had surprisingly little to do with luck. The Romanian-born mathematician realized that instead of trying to predict the winning numbers, he could use mathematics to improve his chances. His strategy was based on one simple idea: buy enough tickets to cover every possible combination when the potential jackpot was large enough to make the numbers work in his favor.

Mandel first tested the strategy in Romania, where his syndicate won a relatively modest prize. He later moved to Australia and organized the International Lotto Fund, bringing together investors who could contribute money toward purchasing huge numbers of tickets. The group eventually won substantial prizes in Australia, Romania, and the United States, with Mandel reportedly involved in 14 lottery wins overall.

The strategy attracted serious attention from authorities because buying massive numbers of tickets and organizing investors on such a scale looked suspicious. Mandel and members of his operation faced investigations and lengthy legal battles, but he was ultimately cleared of the major accusations against him. His biggest success came with a $27 million Virginia lottery jackpot in 1992, after which his financial affairs became increasingly complicated.

Mandel’s approach wasn’t really about discovering a secret formula for predicting lottery numbers—it was about changing the mathematics of the game by covering enough combinations to make a jackpot potentially profitable. Eventually, lottery operators changed their rules and introduced restrictions that made his strategy impractical or impossible to repeat. His story remains one of the most extraordinary examples of someone using mathematics to exploit the structure of a lottery rather than simply hoping for luck.
