Math problem divides the internet

A simple math problem has taken the internet by storm, leaving thousands of people arguing over what seems like an easy answer. At first glance, the equation looks like something straight out of a school textbook—but once people start solving it, things quickly get confusing. What should be a basic calculation has turned into a full-blown debate across social media.

The problem usually looks like this: 8 ÷ 2(2 + 2). Some people confidently say the answer is 16, while others are just as sure it equals 1. So how can one equation have two completely different answers? The confusion comes from how people interpret the order of operations—the rules we use to decide which part of the equation to solve first.

According to standard math rules like PEMDAS or BODMAS, you solve the parentheses first, then handle multiplication and division from left to right. Following that method, the equation becomes 8 ÷ 2 × 4, which leads to the answer 16. However, some people treat the 2(4) as a single unit, which changes the result to 1. This difference in interpretation is exactly what caused the internet to split into two sides.

In reality, experts say the problem itself is poorly written and intentionally confusing. In proper math, clearer parentheses would remove all doubt. The lesson here isn’t just about getting the right answer—it’s about how easily small details can completely change the outcome. So… which side are you on? 1 or 16? 🤔
